Menda Baptist Church was planted in 1959 by a German/American Missionary, Rev. Paul Gebauer. In June 1961 when his son in-law died from electrocution he returned home promising to come back and develop structures but never came back. Then, he had already constructed the surviving stone building in the CBC school.
The church and school were planted at Papa A m a n d o ‘ s c o m p o u n d opposite the Catholic Church in Futru and later moved to Papa Ntem’s compound behind the present Mile 4 Police Station. It was in 1961 that they moved to the present site. By 1962 the church was pastored by the then Headmaster of the Menda CBC School, Mr. A. K Akenji. The stone building was used as classroom within the week and during t h e w e e k e n d p u p i l s rearranged the benches for the worship service on Sunday. The few families during these early years included those of Papa Nchang, Papa Ngong and t h e A k e n j i s . C h u r c h a t t e n d a n c e w a s compulsory for pupils and a b s e n c e a t t r a c t e d punishment church was pastored by lay preachers for very short durations. Outstanding among the lay preachers then were Mr. Akenji, Papa Nchang, Papa Ndifor and Papa Ngong. In 1964, the church relocated and c o n s t r u c t e d a g r a s s thatched building around where the present football field is, but a storm pulled it down causing the church to return to worshiping in a classroom in 1971. From the early 1990s, the church was often pastored by pastors on part time basis and for short tenures. Among those were Rev. Khama Samson (1969-73),
Rev. Mbah Victor (1974- 1976), and Samuel Tatur. It was under the leadership of Mr. Ndangeh Emmanuel, a Headmaster of the CBC School that the old Church building at the entrance of the compound was built.
Members who were not able to donate money donated labour and pupils o f t h e C B C s c h o o l contributed by moulding bricks and supplying water to the builders. By 1978, the new building was put to use. Then Rev. Samson Khama and Rev. Stephen Bangsi (still lay preachers at the time) were helping the church. Later on, a researcher named Thomas Gas (a white) occasionally helped to preach in the church.
A gradual transition from part time pastors to full time pastors happened from the nineteen eighties to the nineties. The formation of an identity grew along with this transition.
Pastor John Tontoh (from Babanki Tungo) was called to serve as full time pastor. When he left, Rev. Khama Samuel (the then CBC Executive Secretary) and Mr. Emmanuel Bonlack Nyanganji took turns preaching in the late 1980s. Mr. Menkem, a lay preacher, covered part of the time after the departure of Pastor John To n t o h . P a s t o r K i y a m Shadrack, a native of Bum was called in 1989 who served up to 1992 and left. Chaplain D i a n g h a E m m a n u e l , a member of the church who was serving at Nkwen Baptist Health Center offered pastoral services to the church during the interim. Papa Tansi John was then the church Appointed Deacon. It was during this time that the present church building was constructed
